Participating in a discussion is more than just being present. Communicating effectively in a group discussion involves:

Preparing to participate. Before group members take part in a discussion, they should first study the outline to be discussed, think about the discussion questions, and do research on the discussion question if needed. Research can actually include one’s own experiences, asking others for information and opinions, and studying relevant materials in the library or media center. The participants need to evaluate their understanding of the discussion outline, the discussion questions, and any background research.

Taking an active part. During the discussion, members are expected to participate fully. Members are expected to share information that they have gathered about the discussion topic, ask questions to clarify, and respond directly to statements made by other group members.

Listening carefully. Participants in discussions often concentrate so hard on what to say that they do not listen closely to other group members.

A typical young leader, studies show, is a person that exceeds the other members of his group in sociability, initiative, persistence, knowledge of how to get things done, self-confidence, alertness to and insight into situations, cooperation, popularity, adaptability,and verbal capacity. The secret of success of young leaders today is the combination of their leadership and verbal skills. Quantity/quality of speech must be accompanied by a degree of leadership potential as well.

A leader gives hope, faith, inspiration and the power of enthusiasm. He is a man of character, a builder pf men, dependable, creative, loyal and honest.
